Room with a view
A Walk through the Evolution of an Eating Disorder
This room is on display in the Rotunda Gallery of the NE City Union during mid-fall semester. (This walk through display is free, and open to the public.)
Travel through the four rooms:
Images, Distortion, Despair, and HOPE.
Images:
This section is filled with the images and messages that the mass media and fashion industries project to our society.
Distortion:
Due to the standardized ideals of beauty that fashion and media have created, we develop a misperception of body size and shape, causing a person's views of his/her own body image to become distorted, which leads to the
person adopting unhealthy behaviors, i.e. excessive exercise, calorie counting/dieting, & negative self talk.
Despair:
In this section, the eating disorder has begun, and the person is falling into the pitfalls of the behaviors, symptoms, and beliefs that coincide with an eating disorder. Within this room, poetry, artwork, binge scenes,
and journal entries exist.
Hope:
Although an eating disorder is a life-threatening illness, there is hope, with help from professionals and friends and a re-established image of self, one can pull through and look at life through a lens of brighter
colors. This room has information on who to go to for help, as well as other resources that EDEP/SHINE believes will be helpful for anyone.
