Patient-Friendly Building

Students who pay the health center fee as part of the University Program and Facilities Fee can receive certain University Health Center services at no extra charge. Learn more about covered services.
Services not covered by the fee or services for patients who do not pay the health center fee will be billed at the community rate. Students can handle these charges a number of different ways:

  • Submit them to insurance
  • Pay by:
    • Cash
    • Check
    • Visa or Mastercard
    • NCard

Thirty days following the visit, any unpaid charges or charges remaining after insurance will be automatically transferred to their student accounts consolidated bill on MyRED if they are currently enrolled in classes. Students can pay at the time of service if they choose.

Please note that Counseling and Psychological Services is separate from the health center. CAPS services are generally covered by University Program and Facilities Fees. Certain services, such as assessments and alcohol and drug services, may incur a charge. If you receive a charge for this service, please consult CAPS by calling 402-472-7450.

Private Insurance

Nebraska Medicine participates with many insurance companies. Click here for a complete list.

Bring your insurance card (or a copy/picture of the front and back sides of the policyholder’s card) with you to every health center appointment.

If you have a primary care physician or PCP listed on your insurance card, you normally are required to get a referral from the PCP to receive services anywhere other than their office.

Before you visit, we recommend you check with your insurance company to make sure that Nebraska Medicine (not the University Health Center) is in network with your plan.

If you have questions about whether a particular charge will be covered by your insurance, contact your insurance company directly at their toll-free number, which is usually located on your insurance card. Your insurance company can tell you:

  • What services are covered under your plan
  • If a provider is in network with your insurance
  • If pre-authorization or a referral is required for charges to be covered
  • If you have a deductible and what you’ll pay after your deductible has been met
  • How much your co-insurance or co-payment will be

Remember, insurance benefits are determined by your insurance company and individual plan, not the health center. Patients are responsible for any charges not covered by your insurance, including applicable copay, co-insurance and/or deductible

UNL Student Health Insurance

The university offers a student insurance plan to students called UnitedHealthcare StudentResources. Only international students and certain graduate assistants are automatically enrolled in this plan. Domestic students do not need to waive the plan on their bill.

Students who are interested in enrolling in the student insurance plan can click here to learn more.

No Insurance

Health insurance is not required to be treated at the health center. Students who choose not to submit to insurance or do not have insurance can receive a self-pay discount.

Financial assistance is available through Nebraska Medicine. If you are interested in applying for financial assistance, we recommend doing so at least 30 days prior to the date you use health center services as it takes time to complete the process. Only students, not parents, can complete the financial assistance process. For more information and to begin applying, visit the Nebraska Medicine website.
